    The origin of the name
"Roots" is a transliteration of the English Roots. In honor of the first application of the Roots principle, the American Roots brothers, they are named. [In fact, the design principle of the Roots pump was invented by Saia Davis in 1848, but it was not until 20 years later, in 1868, that it was implemented in practice by the American Roots brothers Francis and Philander.] 】

History of the application of the Roots principle
In the beginning, this vacuum pump was used as a blower for internal combustion engines; Later, by inverting the drive, the Roots principle was applied to gas meters. It was not until 1954 that this principle was applied to the field of vacuum pumps.

    Structural features
The Roots vacuum pump is a rotary positive displacement pump in which two symmetrically shaped impellers rotate close to each other inside the pump housing. The cross-section of the two rotors resembles the shape of the number 8 and is synchronized by toothed gears. The gap between the rotor and the shell wall and between the rotor itself is very small (as small as a few tenths of a millimeter). As a result, roots pumps can operate at high speeds without mechanical wear.

    Why not use it alone
The Roots pump is a vacuum pump without internal compression, usually the compression ratio is very low, so it can not be used alone, medium and high vacuum pumps need to use backing pumps to match. Roots pump generally can not be started under normal pressure, if directly started, the motor power is very large, will hurt the vacuum pump, and with the backing pump (such as rotary vane pump), you can help the main pump Roots pump smooth start, continuous operation.

Roots pumps do not have any vacuum
A single Roots pump has no vacuum, and Roots pumps are just supercharged pumps. It needs to be used in a vacuum unit with the backing pump. When used in conjunction with a backing pump, the Roots pump can perform optimally. Roots pumps are used in combination with rotary vane pumps or dry pumps to extend the working range to the medium vacuum range; With two-stage roots pumps, it can be extended to a high vacuum range.
